Description

The tetrasquel or lauburu (from the Basque “four heads”) is the name given to a cross with curvilinear arms. This symbol is very often found among the artistic representations of certain European peoples, such as the Celtic and Germanic, as for example, in Visigothic drawings and carvings. Also, you can see lauburus engraved in Galician petroglyphs and in Asturian and Galician hórreos (as, for example, in Grullos, Quirós and Piornedo), being called in this case simply “tetrasquels”. Curvilinear swastikas of four or more arms have also been used in Aragon, where they are known in some Pyrenean towns as cuatrefuellas or religadas (this last name regardless of the number of arms). It is currently one of the most representative and recognizable symbols of Basque culture, although traditionally it has never been used, for example, in shields or flags of any territory in the current provinces of Biscay, Guipúzcoa, Álava or Navarre.
