The Basque Country (Basque: Euskal Herria, ‘country of the Basque language’) is a European country. It includes the seven territories that roughly correspond to the Basque linguistic area in historical times. The identifying flag of the Basque people is the ikurriña. Currently, these territories are divided between the Spanish and French states, and have very different levels of autonomy. There is no recognized administrative entity that encompasses the entirety of the Basque Country. This is the territory that many Basque independenceists claim to form an independent state. The historical capital claimed by those Basques who yearn for independence is Pamplona (Iruña or Iruñea in Basque), because this was the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre, a kingdom that monopolized the territories where Basque was spoken.
