Breton (in Breton: Brezhoneg) is a Celtic language spoken in western Brittany, in the French state. In decline despite attempts to revive it, it is estimated that around 500,000 people speak it (more than a million at the beginning of the 20th century). It has been documented since the fifth century and is based on the language of immigrants from the island of Brittany or Great Britain, with a small influence from the language of Gaul.
